SEK | FROM CHAOS ; GROWTH
“FROM CHAOS ; GROWTH” is a body of work based on self-awareness and growth from dark, chaotic and destructive patterns and experiences in my life. These experiences led me to find peace and balance between the two.
Growing up in a hostile environment with gang violence and poverty led me to find ways to adapt and survive these situations. These experiences often resulted in forming destructive patterns and behavior that would harm me and those around me.
As I continue to grow and look back at all I have done, I have found myself having to face my actions and past, which has caused me a sense of shame, depression, and anxiety. The idea that one can grow from a dark place doesn't seem fathomable at times, not until you're allowing “light” to come into your space and your overall being. This growth takes form in many different ways. I translate it and put it into what I create, allowing it to release some of the angst I have built up over the years. It allows me to move through some of my most painful moments and continue to forge my way through life.
This is the chaos.
This is the growth.
This is part of me.

It’s not about having the desire to create,
the art appears when it has something to say.
Our spirits are bonded by forms, words, rhythms, beats, images + feelings we can’t erase | so we transform them, as they’ve transformed us.
Here is where pain + inspiration intersects and become one. Known as art to some, healing to others, and a mass of emotions to most.
Those that dig deep, touch the surface of their souls, and understand the process of that and all that it entails…Here we become one and in that journey, we leave a little of ourselves in everything we do.
From the moment SEK and I met, we bonded and have seen and helped one another go through several life challenges. When I was approached to have an exhibition at ARTBUG, it made sense to work with SEK. I got to produce his last exhibition, “These things will f**k with your eyes” and have been watching him build his next exhibition.
“FROM CHAOS ; GROWTH” is a show in-between two bodies of work which I resonate with deeply and felt moved to create an intimate exhibition. While the imagery in this exhibition may look alike, the language that he uses for this body of work speaks to his healing and growth and is incredibly telling in each piece. His creative process and language in this exhibit is something I feel anyone that has been through similar challenges will be able to relate to his work in some way.
Our spirit, mind, and body tell us what we need and all that we should release + hold onto if we take the time to listen. This body of work is that.
Learning, loving, and letting go.
